Special Needs and Learning Difficulties

We celebrate neurodiversity. Literacy Specialist Mohini will individualize your child’s program according to their unique needs, abilities and interests.

The Right Fit

Literacy Playground is a better fit for some kids than others. Our customized reading and writing programs have helped children with dyslexia, dysgraphia and ADHD make steady progress. Literacy Playground activities are engaging for visual and kinesthetic learners

Accommodating Learning Difficulties

When we find out we’ll be creating a customized reading and writing program for someone who has a special need or learning difficulty, the first thing that comes to mind is creating a routine that includes repetition and review. Their parents might need to teach the same literacy lesson multiple times for the child to understand the concept. They may need more guided and independent practice than a neurotypical student.

Some accommodations we use to support neurodivergent students are visual routines, checklists and timers. We use these tools so that children know what to expect. Clear routines and expectations reduce stress and build focus.

Every child is different. A successful reading and writing program for children with special needs and learning difficulties should be individualized.

A Learning Plan That Reflects Learning Style

Does your child learn best when they’re moving their body or expressing themselves through art? Is your child a strong listener and observer? Do they prefer discussing?

The best learning plans for your child will lean into their strengths and their learning style.

When a child uses their strengths as tools for learning, learning becomes less stressful and more fun!

It Takes a Team.

We’ve worked with many special education teachers over the past eight years. They are some of the most patient, creative and resourceful people we know.

Literacy Playground activities are evidence-based. They should reinforce what special educators, teachers and specialists are already working on with your kids.

We’re STRONG advocates for parent-teacher partnerships. We encourage you to communicate what you’re working on here with specialists and teachers.

If you're looking for the right vocabulary for talking to teachers and specialists about Literacy Playground, let them know that you're helping your child reinforce their learning through an individualized structured literacy program that’s designed for you to implement with your child.

It takes a team to support a child with learning difficulties.
